玉龍雪山,位於雲南省麗江市城北15公里,是北半球處於緯度最南的現代海洋性冰川,雪山山上終年積雪,山下四季如春,從山腳河谷地帶到峰頂具備了亞熱帶、溫帶、寒帶的完整的垂直帶自然景觀。在《夜縛玉龍》一文中,吳冠中描述了一次在月夜對玉龍山寫生的經過:「一個夜晚,忽然月明天藍,玉龍山露面了,通身潔白,仿佛蘇珊出浴。我立即叫醒小楊(楊福泉),便衝出去就地展開筆墨寫生。」 畫面在橫幅中展開,綿延的玉龍山不以具象的形式呈現,而是以幾何構成的方式重新組合,畫家通過變形、扭曲、擠壓等手段拆解了山川本身的結構,山坡的暗面被轉換成很重的墨塊,天空以及一部分坡面用不同層次的灰墨染出,而畫面大的架構則是用細線簡單勾勒出來的山脊。深淺不一的墨塊,起伏的線條,繽紛散落的墨點和色點使靜止的畫面產生一種律動,仿佛可以在山川之間聽到天籟之音。 畫家極其注重形質和氛圍的表達,這些經過提煉和意象化的風景並不刻意追求完整和寫實,而是通過新穎的手段,在光影、明暗、塊面的重新設置中,賦予畫面一種構成性、平面性、裝飾性和抒情性,使其超脫了物象的束縛,既有形式上的美感,又不失傳統中國畫的靜謐格調。
